Our experience

We have already hosted 3 students in Berlin: two master’s students from the IPN and one bachelor’s student from FACMED-UNAM, funded by UNAM-PAPIIT and the DAAD. Together we have published 3 studies on knee osteoarthritis pain (ISSSTE–DRFZ), hip osteoarthritis pain (ISSSTE) and tuberculosis in the brain (INNN–DRFZ). We have presented our work at the World Osteoarthritis Congress 2024 in Vienna and at Cutting Edge Osteoarthritis 2025 at the University of Oxford.

R&D REQUEST · Seeking consortium partners
Early knee osteoarthritis: clinical partners for a multicentre therapy study
Who. Dr. Nayar Durán Hernández · Deutsches Rheuma-Forschungszentrum (DRFZ) Berlin, research institute est. 1988 · Spanish, English, German · nayar.duran@drfz.de
The project. A multicentre study comparing standard pain therapies in early knee osteoarthritis. Patients are evaluated with WOMAC, VAS and KOOS before and after treatment, and synovial fluid is collected during treatment to link clinical response with protein changes in the joint.
What we offer. A fixed study design, central biobanking, sample processing and protein analysis (ELISA, NULISA). Stage: concept, design defined.
What we seek. Clinical sites with osteoarthritis patients, experience with WOMAC/VAS and intra-articular injections, and one contact person per site. Online meetings monthly for 3 months, then every 2 months.
Partnership. Academic collaboration · Joint grant application · Mexico (others welcome) · Hospitals and university clinics
Keywords. Osteoarthritis · Clinical trial design · Biobanking · Synovial fluid · Proteomics · Patient-reported outcomes

Safer medication for older adults: partners for a multicentre care-pathway intervention
Who. Ana Ordóñez Cruickshank, M.Sc. · Institute of General Practice, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, university hospital est. 1710 · Spanish, English, French, German · ana.ordonez@charite.de
The project. Older adults with several chronic diseases often take many medicines at once, which raises the risk of harmful interactions. We want to co-design and test a clinical pathway that reviews and adjusts their medication across several centres.
What we offer. Study design, epidemiology and population data analysis, building on an ongoing randomised trial of outpatient care for older adults in Germany (InATheGer). Stage: concept, endpoints to be agreed with partners.
What we seek. Institutions caring for geriatric patients, partners to co-design the study, and centres for data collection.
Partnership. Academic collaboration · Joint grant application · Mexico (others welcome) · Hospitals, geriatric and primary care services
Keywords. Geriatrics · Polypharmacy · Multimorbidity · Clinical pathways · Health services research · Epidemiology
